Here we go again, with more retail stores closing their doors. This time, it's near and dear to many of us here on the blog.
Don't worry too much. So far BJ's Wholesale club is only closing two locations.
One in Geneva, NY and one in Charlotte, NC. The company closures are based on reviews of club performance in addition to real estate and market evaluation.
Here is the official statement.
“We continuously evaluate our strategic footprint to ensure it supports our growth initiatives and drives value for members and shareholders. We remain on track to open two new clubs in the first half of 2020 – one in Pensacola, FL. and one Chesterfield, MI, and are aggressively building our real estate pipeline moving forward. We expect to close one club in Charlotte, N.C. and one in Geneva, NY by February 1, 2020. We are committed to supporting our Team Members through this transition. Team members will be eligible to apply for positions at other BJ’s locations and will be eligible for severance.”
The Geneva store will close it's doors by Feb 1, 2020. Members can receive a refund for their membership if they do not have another club to shop at.
If you are curious about the employees,, they can work at other locations.

I think all BJ’s stores should close. The rotten experience I had today, is going to force me to never shop at BJ’s again. I checked out normally and got a receipt print out , that said I was automatically enrolled in membership renewal, which I don’t want. Went to the service desk and they said they could not take me out of the automatic membership renewal program. Needless to say, I WAS UPSET,VERY UPSET. Upset to the point that I am cancelling my BJ’s membership. I don’t need to be treated like garbage.

I have to agree with you. I regreet renewing my membership. I hate going to the store because I know I have to checkout with computers that don’t work. After you scan your card the problems start. I try to limit the amount of trips to BJ’s to keep from getting frustrated. The line is the first problem. Checkout time could be reduced by 90% if they tossed their existing system in the trash. You can’t even leave the store without waiting in another line to prove that you paid for the items that you had to scan 40 times.

Have you tried the curbside pickup? That may be a great option for you at your location.

Explain to me please why is such a huge wholesale store like bjs cannot have their grocery shelves stocked up like they always were. Have gone twice shopping and never saw such empty shelves. They let seniors in earlier to shop but everything is empty. I pay over $100 per year for special savings and I can find more food at a normal grocery store without paid that extra fee per year. What is going on. How can these smaller stores have their shelves filled but not bjs.
Tasia
Because of the pandemic many more people are shopping less frequently and heading to wholesale clubs possibly for the first time and stocking up. I’ve found not shopping on a weekend shelves are full. It also depends on your area. We now have completely full shelves at our local BJs. Give it time, things aren’t going to be perfect right now, but everyone is trying.

I can tell you it is a true, PITA to drive to either Costco location. Each one is 44+ miles round trip. We keep the Costco membership ($60 per year) only to make a periodic trip for their flank steaks and pile them up in our freezer. EVERYTHING else we want is available at BJ’si in Pineville, NC and it takes just 20 minutes to get there. BJ’s also has self checkout, and never, ever extra long lines. Costco checkout reminds us of a typical bank with 6-8 teller windows and never more than 2 are open!! They also open at 9am rather than Costco 10am. We live slightly south of the NC/SC state line. If they do close the Pineville store, management is just plain stupid.
Shipwreck
just another retailer that is seeing falling profits coupled with increased operational costs. To the non-business people here, it’s not a hard decision. Take your worst performing stores and close them, or else let the whole ship sink. There will be more closings in the next 12-18 months or else they are preparing to sell the company off.
John
Sorry for the closing
Lisa
Sorry to see my BJ’s Charlotte Midtown store close. But I racked up on the 25% off everything in the store savings today. Thanks BJ’s.

Well first, this is a blog and I’m just a BJs shopper like you. You will need to reach out to BJs club directly.

To shop at another BJ’s nearby to Geneva is an hour away. Where is that convenient? Another stupid idea by greedy corporate managers.
Tasia
Yeah it is a bummer. I thought the Victor store was only a half hour away?

I agree its all about money in their pocket i use to work there their quality of products have gone down over the yrs they just sell junk to me Roundup is one of them

This sucks my son works just a few miles down the road from the Geneva BJS that’s where he shops plus gets his gas if he needs it before he goes home in Clifton Springs.
Tasia
Oh that is a bummer :(. I think the closest one might be in Victor now.

Sad thing for the Finger Lakes Region. There already isn’t a ton there without heading to Auburn, Rochester or ‘Cuse.
Sad.

Not what I want to hear! 🙁 Hope no more closing down the road….I agree, a bummer for those who shop there.
Tasia
Me too. I hope this is it.

I hear ya. I was very nervous hearing it was in New York State. Glad I have four in our area to shop at.
