How to Make Homemade Lunchables with Ingredients From BJ’s

how to make your own lunchables with ingredients from BJs

This isn’t really a recipe, but more of a meal idea.  Whenever I bring the kids with me to the store, they ask me to buy Lunchables. So, to put a little fun into their day, I attempted to make a more wholesome “lunchable”.  Let’s face it, kids like finger food.  Mom likes easy meal planning.  It’s a win-win!

Here are the items I bought for their mock lunchables (6 servings):

Cost for Ingredients
Earth’s Pride Organics Juice Boxes (4 pack/36 ct) – $9.49
Nabisco Ritz Crackers (34.3 oz) – $4.99
Applegate Farms Deli Sliced Provolone (1lb) – $6.99
Applegate Farms Uncured Genoa Salami (twin pack/4oz) – $6.29
Stonyfield Organic YoKids Squeezers Variety Pack (16 ct/2 oz) – $5.99
2 Mott’s Green Apple Slices (10 ct/2 oz) – $3.99 x 2 = $7.98
Total Cost for Ingredients: $41.73

Directions
I simply cut the cheese into 4 equal pieces.  They each had 8 pieces of salami, 8 cut pieces of cheese, 10 crackers, 1 yogurt, 1 package of apple slices and 1 juice box. (Note: You could cut the salami in half to make them fit better on the crackers, and to stretch the meal out to 12 servings. This would make the cost even less per serving.)

Price Breakdown Per Serving
1 Earth’s Pride Organics Juice Box ($9.49/36 = .26)
10 Ritz Crackers ($4.99/61 servings = .08 x 2 servings each = .16)
2 Slices of Applegate Provolone ($6.99/16 = .43 x 2 = .86)
8 Slices of Applegate Salami ($6.29/6 = $1.05)
1 YoKids Squeezer ($5.99/16 servings = .37)
1 Package of Mott’s Green Apple Slices ($3.99/10 servings = .39)
Total Cost Each Serving: $3.09

Let’s Compare
A standard box of Lunchables comes with a few slices of meat, cheese, crackers and a piece of candy. For more money you can get the ones with a juice pouch in it.  On PeaPod.com, I found them listed for around $3.  At least here, you are giving them a healthier lunchable and a bigger portion.

Here are other items you could mix and match to make your own lunchables. There is really no limit to the combinations. Tailor it to what your family likes!
Sabra Hummus (30 oz for $5.99) and Tostitos Scoops Pick N’ Pack ($5.98 for 2 bags)
Berkley & Jensen Granola (2 lbs for $6.49) and Stonyfield Organic YoKids Squeezers Variety Pack (16 ct/2 oz for $5.99)
Annie’s Organic Fruit Snacks Variety Pack (24 ct for $10.29)
JIF to Go Peanut Butter (36 ct/1.5 oz for $8.99) and Mott’s Green Apple Slices (10 ct/2 oz for $3.99)
3 lbs of Bananas ($1.47)
Wellsley Farms  Organics Baby Carrots (2 lbs for $2.99)
Hard Boiled Eggs using Eggland’s Best Eggs (18 ct for $3.39)
Mini Rice Cakes (not found at BJ’s)
Frigo Cheeseheads Light String Cheese (36 ct/.833 oz for $7.39)
ProBugs Whole Milk Kefir (12 ct/4 oz for $11.99)
Blue Diamond Almonds Single Serve (32 ct for $9.99)
Poland Spring Mini Jugs (36 ct/8 oz for $4.79)

Nothing fancy!  But the kids love it!  I hope yours do, too.  Enjoy!
