When it comes to Propane, BJ's is by far the cheapest.
Propane tanks are a great way to enjoy all the perks of traditional fossil fuels without any harmful emissions. You can buy them at cost ($29 for two) or exchange an empty one back in store for around eight dollars, depending on where you live!
First, you purchase the pre-filled tank for $29.99. Then, for BJ's members, it costs $7.99 for a refill. Non-members $12.49. Check around. That is a steal!

You may be new to grilling or have never purchased a propane tank at BJ's and other retailers, but don't worry! This is an easy process.
Below are some quick tips to get you started.
- Purchase Propane Tank (BJ's $29.99) (Lowe's has Blue Rhino $29.99)
- Exchange an empty one for $12.97 or $9.97 (Prices vary in certain locations)
- Make sure the tank has decent paint, double check the date and valve.
- Most retailers, Walgreens, Walmart, Lowes, Gas stations, usually charge around $20 for refills. BJ's is under $10
- Never use tools to hook up your tank. Just remove the plastic cap and make sure the needle fits into the valve. You'll probably hear air release.
- Don't bring the tanks inside stores. Set them next to their caged propane display.
- If you already have a tank, be aware some stores won't fill certain kinds due to law restrictions.
- Clubs can only fill 20lb and 30 lb tanks.
- All Clubs that sell propane will take back old propane tanks for a $5 disposal fee
Most BJ's club's propane tank areas are near the Tire center. You will need to go into the Tire center entrance to pay for your refill or if you are buying a new tank. Then the BJ's employees will direct you to the tank and fill it up.

Bj s only put 4.1 gallons in so it is half a gallon under my local place that puts 4.6 gallons in ,so it’s not cheap.
Is this for 15lbs of propane or 20lbs?? Here’s a little secret… The exchange tanks (Blue Rhino, AmeriGas, Cinch) use 20lbs Propane cylinders (which is the industry standard for grills – you’ll note they have the notation “W.C. 47.8” stamped on the tank’s collar if its a true 20lbs tank) , but dispensers may also only put 15lbs (3.58 gallons) in the tanks to keep the price down. The exchange companies use a plastic wrap with the notation 15lbs on it so they can fill only 75% and not be sued for misleading you to think you are receiving 20lbs. Bj’s should have it noted somewhere for the public to see.
Bottom line: Double check the number of gallons your BJ’s is putting in your 20# tank… it should be 4.2 gallons. This could be why the prices vary in different locations.
They can’t refill a 40lb tank? That’s all I have 🙁
You could give your local BJs a call and see what they say too.
Please don’t forget to add that you can sit in the ran down tire shop dump for 2 hours while their one employee changes 2 tires(average one tire an hour) on SOMEBODY else’s vehicle while you have to wait to refill your propane.. moral of the story.. the grass isn’t always greener spend the extra 6$ and eat your dinner before midnight

Yes that’s about right in nj too. You should specify that the ‘same price for nonmembers’ policy is not true everywhere. It’s likely a state law in your state but not everywhere.

The propane prices are excellent. I checked, even though I have mine hooked up to propane tank. My friends get their refills at bjs.

I still have yet to check if my BJ’s does refills. They sell the tanks. My club only had a tire sales area not a gas station.
