BJ’s Wholesale Club is what I like to call the hidden little secret of wholesale clubs. Everyone knows about Costco; it seems, but what about BJ’s?

I feel like it is the underdog, and it’s only a matter of time before I’m not the only mega super BJ’s Wholesale Club fan! ( I know many of my loyal followers are here with me!)

If you are a BJ’s member and haven’t filled up your tank at the club, you need to know the following tips.

If you are a Costco member, you can apply much of the same information to your wholesale club. However, I’ll note the differences in the article.

Know The Latest Gas Promotion Offer

Always Check the Gas Sign before you enter the club, or quickly check out the gas promos spot on the blog.

There aren’t many days when BJ’s Wholesale Club doesn’t have some gas promotion. BJ’s gas promos range from buying select items to receiving a certain amount per gallon of gas.

In addition, sometimes they offer anything you buy during a specific time, and you get extra savings at the pump.

Almost always on a BJs gas promo, you have to buy the items and fill up your tank all in one day. However, you can use coupons on things included in the gas promotions.

If you shop at warehouse clubs, avoid these seven things next time you’re shopping to save money.

How to Find BJ’s Fuel Saver Items (Was called High-Octane Items)

Every month or so, BJ’s updates its Fuel Saver gas list. When shopping in the club at your local BJ’s, you will want to look for items with the Fuel Saver gas symbol.

This lets you know you will get 10 cents off a gallon of gas if you purchase that item.

Different Memberships Offer Extra Gas Savings

There are three different membership options for BJ’s Wholesale Club. Unfortunately, one of them comes with a higher price tag of $110 a year.

A BJ’s Perks Elite membership with the My BJ “s Perks MasterCard pays you 5% back on most in-Club and BJs.com purchases.

You also earn 10 cents off per gallon at BJ’s Gas every day, 2% on eating out and non-BJ’s Gas purchases, and 1% everywhere else MasterCard is accepted.

There is no limit on earnings with this membership.

How to Navigate and Actually Fill Up Your Tank at BJs

Go Only One Way

You can only go one way through the gas station. This helps keep the line moving. It also allows cars to use either lane.

When gas prices are soaring, and the lines are long, it is pretty upsetting when someone whips around the wrong way.

Use the BJs App to See Current Gas Prices

BJ’s recently launched its app. You can add BJ’s club coupons right to your membership card through it ( or add online here) and check local gas prices.

Always price compares if you have a few different BJ’s clubs near you.

Why? For example, with gas prices rising daily- one club is at $4.10, and the other is $4.13.

These days EVERY savings counts. So I would instead shop at the Henrietta store, get my high-octane gas items, and pay even less.

BJ’s Gas Hours for 2023

Fill Up Early

All clubs will vary, of course, on this one. However, in our area, I have found that anytime after 11 am, the gas stations get busy.

It’s not uncommon to wait in line for ten minutes filling up, especially when there is a gas promotion. BJ’s Wholesale club gas stations open earlier than the store.

So you can fill up before the doors. The case has been the earlier you go, the faster you fill up.

Your gas discounts should load to your card right away. But, unfortunately, I have had times where it didn’t show up until the next fill-up.

Check-in your app to see if you have the gas savings BEFORE you fill up if you plan to get a certain amount off.

You Don’t Have to Pull Up on The Gas Tank Side

If you need gas and it’s busy at the gas station, don’t wait in line to use your gas tank. The hoses are extra long so you can pull up to any lane.

I struggle a bit more than my husband when pulling the hose, but it’s not so bad once you get the hang of it.

Before you start filling up, pull the hose as much as possible and then start walking over to your gas tank.

Bring Your Gas Cans

We always fill up our gas cans at BJ’s, especially when there is a gas promotion. When my tank is low, and I don’t want to pay higher prices at our only gas station in town, we use our gas can first.

You know, it’s sort of like the whole use what you have in your pantry before you go grocery shopping idea!

BJs Ranks High Among Other Competitors

A new study from Market Force Information has revealed that BJ’s Wholesale Club is one of the consumer’s favorite places to fill up their gas tanks.

Market Force polled more than 10,000 consumers for the annual study, which ranks gas stations in two separate categories – traditional gas stations and convenience stores, and grocery stores and big-box retailers with gas stations.

“In the grocery and big-box category, BJ’s Wholesale Club took the number one spot in this year’s study, an honor that went to Costco in 2015. Fellow wholesale club Costco ranked second, Kroger ranked third and Sam’s Club dropped a spot to fourth.”
